Due to its central geographical position in Europe, Belgium has an extensive history. Originally, the Sea the main road for the supply of goods from abroad. To improve the transportation of these goods into the country, an elaborate network of canals was created. These channels form the connection between the Belgian rivers. The rivers Schelde, Lys, Ijzer, Maas and Dender have been used for centuries as transport routes. The economic and social life was focused with time in these waterways.

Even today, parts of these waterways are the main link with the neighboring countries. In ports such as in Ghent, the international activities can be observed clearly. Some of the older channels have been adjusted in the meantime the water tourism. This narrow, winding waterways are the visitor an unparalleled opportunity to discover Belgium.

The Lys (Leie) is probably the most famous romantic waterway, with its old mansions and many turns. The journey on the waterways of Flanders and Wallonia is an ideal insight into the rich historical heritage of this region. Even the centers of the medieval cities of Bruges and Ghent (our home port) may be reached by boat.

But smaller towns and charming villages waiting to be discovered by you. The versatility of the Belgian countryside is full of surprises: the quiet "Flanders Fields" just behind the shoreline, endless moors, with its sandy soil, dark pine forests and the diversity of deciduous forests in Limburg and the Ardennes .

Idea for a weekend

Weekend Ghent and a piece on the Lys, a successful combination of narrow waters in Alpine countryside, the city of Ghent, with all its magnificent historical monuments. Gent is the capital of the Belgian province of East Flanders and the district of Ghent and Brussels, is located northwest of the confluence of the Scheldt and Lys and is the third largest city of Belgium.
