The Midweek Schelde - Lys leads you on the first day to Merelbeke. The next day you are in Oudenaarde, the city has about 29,000 inhabitants. Oudenaarde is sometimes called the "jewel of the Flemish Ardennes". Oudenaarde has a magnificent Town Hall in the Brabant Gothic style, built by the Brussels architect Hendrik van Pede 1527-1530, and is famous for its tapestries.
Kortrijk lies about 9 miles from the French border and has lots of tourist attractions: the Beguine, St. Martin Church, with its five top tower, the old St. Mary's Church, the Broelentore on the Lys and the marketplace. About the canal Bossuit-Kortrijk and the Lys you reach Deinze. This city, lying about 20 km west of Ghent, was first mentioned in 890 under the name Donsa and is located on the Lys. Here flourished from the Middle Ages until after World War II, the flax industry.
