Kollum is in northeast Friesland, the seat of the municipality of Kollumerland en Nieuwkruisland / Kollumerlân en Nijkrúslân. It is listed as a "vlek", a settlement bigger than a village and smaller than a town, with c. 5.500 inhabitants. The local vernacular "Kollumers" is regarded as a form of "Stadsfries", a mix between Frisian and Dutch. Kollum is a regional center for Kollumerland and Achtkarspelen.
